Cancun has been a spring break attraction for years! Cancun is on the minds of many before spring break even occurs every year. There are all kinds of attractions and activities, from beautiful water and beaches and weather to swimming, boating, shopping, eating, and historical sites. Cancun attracts over two million visitors a year. Cancun is south of New Orleans and southwest of Miami. It is in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. It was once a deserted island with sand dunes that had an influx of investment to make it a focus of tourism in Mexico. It now consists of a long island in the shape of the number 7 that is joined to the mainland from both the north and the south ends. Cancun is approximately 14 miles long and very narrow. Canals on each end provide access to Laguna Nichupte that is between Cancun and the mainland. Cancun has sun and sea breezes to make the weather beautiful most of the time. The average temperature is about 80°F, and it may dip to 65°F in the winter, while rising to 100°F in May. The area is exposed to hurricanes, such as with Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
